Indian Association Oldham
The Indian Association Oldham (IAO) was founded in the 1960s by the late Jagatsinghji Sisodia, a distinguished barrister and former judge from India. At that time, around 30 pioneering Indian families had made Oldham their new home. While they embraced the excitement of life in a new country, they also faced challenges — language barriers, cultural adjustments, and a deep longing for the traditions they left behind. Out of this shared experience, IAO was born — to offer support, preserve Indian heritage, and create a strong sense of belonging within the community.
Over the decades, IAO has grown into a vibrant hub of religious, cultural, educational, and social life. At the heart of the organisation stands our beautiful Community Centre, home to a splendid Hindu Mandir (Temple) dedicated to the major deities of Hinduism. Daily morning and evening prayers, led by our resident Maharaj (Priest) from India, provide spiritual comfort and guidance to devotees. The temple also offers full Hindu ceremonial services including weddings, naming ceremonies, and funeral rites.
IAO takes pride in hosting a rich calendar of festivals and community events throughout the year — including grand celebrations of Diwali, Navratri, Holi, and other significant Hindu occasions. Weekly highlights include: Thursday Luncheon Club – a freshly prepared hot vegetarian meal served at a discounted price. Sunday Dance Classes – featuring both Bollywood and classical Indian dance styles.
Our Saheli Women’s Group provides a warm and supportive space for women to connect, share experiences, and participate in workshops, seminars, and trips focused on wellbeing and personal growth. We also run a variety of classes and activities — including IT, yoga, gardening, cooking, sewing, DIY, and arts & crafts — making IAO a true centre for lifelong learning.
The IAO Mandir serves as an important educational and interfaith destination. Each year, students from schools across the borough visit to learn about Hinduism and Indian traditions. Groups from other faiths and organisations are also welcomed for interfaith dialogue, promoting mutual understanding and community harmony. Beyond this, IAO regularly hosts Indian cultural programmes, drama performances, youth events, and conferences, welcoming artists and guests from across the UK and beyond. Our centre is also available for venue hire for private and community functions.
With an active presence on Facebook and YouTube, IAO reaches audiences around the world through live-streamed events, lectures, and festivals — keeping the spirit of Indian culture alive for future generations. Together, we continue to honour our roots, celebrate diversity, and build a stronger, united community in Oldham and beyond.
